It made sounds.
Spoke to us.
We didn’t know what to do, so we took the largest of us by the arm and dragged him to it.
It was big... hard skinned... shiny... and it breathed black clouds where the burning lights crackled...

“Hello.” It said.

“Heh... Loh...” We replied.

“ This is James Bertam LIVE at the scene of Grace Hospital where the little boy known as Graham went missing.”

“Burr... Tam... Gray... Ham...”

That is when our growls and clicking of jaws became... “words.”...

“Keep going, Gammy!” the little green sanghuli chirped, her purple eyes wide with wonder, “I love this story! Please, don’t stop!”

The old, greyed sanghuli chuckled a deep chuckle. “Sulu, you’ve heard the story thousands of times!”

“But I love it!” the youngling known as Sulu chirped, “I especially love the part about the “hoomens”.”

“Yes... The “Hoomens”... We believe that the Sky creature... the “satellite”... was made by these offworlders...” Gammy continued, “The satellite was proof that we were not alone... and that there was so much more potential to our living besides scrounging around like beasts with lack of intelligence...”

“Intel... Ligence... Ooh, how I love that word.” Sulu giggled and hugged her toy close to her chest, “Tell me more!”

The old Sanghuli smiled. “The hoomans were the voices within the satellite... but no matter how much we searched it... the hoomans were nowhere to be found... were their spirits communicating to us?... Were they invisible, too shy to show themselves unto us?... Or was their presence so powerful, that their godlike abilities would render us unloving?...”

“I think the hoomans were playing hide and seek. I know I love that game.” Sulu grinned a toothy grin.

“The hoomans were the reason we became smart... civilized... and a nearly perfect people...” Gammy sighed, “If it weren’t for them... we would have died off like the prey we hunted...”
Gammy ceased her tale as she noticed the youngling yawn tiredly. “Well now, I think it’s time you go to bed, Sulu.”

Sulu frowned. “But I’m not sleepy!”

“Yes you are.” A deep gruff voice spoke through the doorway, your bedtime was two hours ago, young lady.

Sulu turned to see a dark blue sanghuli with a white painted skull on his face, adding a rather frightening appearance along with his orrin eyes.
Unafraid, she giggled, “Oh Daddy, you know I can’t get tired without a good story... Besides! Gammy doesn’t mind!”

The male sanghuli glanced at the elder. “This true, mother? Be honest. I’d rather not let Sulu continue pestering you if you enjoy your solitude.”

“Oh hush, Fujasi. I enjoy telling tales to my granddaughter.” Gammy replied with a gentle smile, “Such kindred spirit brings joy to my old bones.”

The male, Fujasi snorted. “If you insist... Now come along, Sulu. Your blankie is waiting.” He picked up his little one with a playful growl.

Sulu squealed with laughter before snuggling with her father.

Once tucked neatly into bed, Sulu received a goodnight’s kiss on her forehead.

“Goodnight, my angel.” Fujasi whispered to his daughter.

“Daddy?...” Sulu said sleepily, “I hope I will get to see a real live hoomen one day... They look so cool in the pictures...”

Fujasi hesitated but forced a smile. “One day, I’m sure you will...”

Sulu smiled before closing her eyes and drifting off to sleep, her father’s words echoing in her mind.
